Journal of Henry Souther begun October 30 1849 /transcribed by someone else, ca. 1900.

This typescript of Souther's journal was given to Mary Souther in 1900 by her son Henry. The journal describes life on board ship, the journey around the Horn, and stops in Valparaiso and St. Catherine. Souther chronicles their voyage up the Sacramento River to Marysville, describes the river valley, and records mining at Long Bar on the Feather River in 1850-51. He describes building a cabin, investing in other mines, and prospecting in the surrounding area. The journal ends with a brief description of Henry Souther's voyage home in 1851.

Henry Souther, of Cambridge, voyaged from Boston to California on the ship Richmond in 1849 with his son Henry, brother Frederick, and brother-in-law William E. Appleton. The group mined for gold on the Feather River in a company of men from Cambridge. Except for Henry Souther Jr. they all returned home in 1850 or 1851.
